Features of IBM Engineering DOORS Next

Use the right tool for effective requirements management

IBM Engineering DOORS Next offers tools for capturing, tracing and analyzing requirements for complex products and systems as part of the IBM Watson Internet of Things (IoT) portfolio. It allows you to take control of your project costs with change and configuration management built directly into the requirements tool. This software is available on premises and in the cloud.

Increase traceability and visibility of changes

Requirements management solution users can manage change across the product lifecycle for faster impact assessment and better quality. They can explore information with more granularity with individually managed information and artifacts. You can assess the impact of changes more quickly by linking change requests to requirements. Drag-and-drop traceability is also supported. This software allows you to utilize proven models and templates for certification and compliance.

Gain transparency, minimize rework and increase reusability

Word processor or spreadsheet users can benefit from having all their requirements available from a secure, central and accessible location. They can understand what changes have been made and who made them, when they were made and what they affect. They can organize, trace and link priorities and requirements across the development lifecycle; or view history, reviews and discussion comments within the context of the document. Create multiple views with a different perspective of data.

A vibrant partner ecosystem

IBM has a long history of working with business partners that understand the challenges of requirements management. IBM surrounds these partners with the right tools, training, expertise and support to help their clients become industry leaders in managing requirements efficiently. Visit the Jazz.net site for a list of partners with Ready for IBM Rational validated integrations to Jazz-based products and cloud partners that host Jazz solutions.

Improve project agility through concurrent editing

Systems and software engineering teams can improve collaboration and project agility through concurrent editing, automated versioning and effective prioritization. They can access requirements databases concurrently across multiple users without conflict or disruption, while ensuring that teams use consistent terminology with an integrated glossary. Visualize information through customizable dashboards and automated reporting. Edit, author and analyze artifacts on a feature-rich web client.

Strengthen collaboration among multi-disciplinary teams

IBM Engineering DOORS 9 users who want a single-server or purely web-based requirements solution can create a stronger collaboration among multi-disciplinary product development teams. Access a single server solution across disciplines, time zones and teams. Integrate with IBM Engineering Workflow Management, IBM Engineering Test Management and IBM Engineering Rhapsody Modeling Manager on IBM Jazz collaborative lifecycle management platform. Migrate easily from Rational DOORS using a built-in migration tool.

Comparing IBM Engineering DOORS Next with IBM DOORS Software

DOORS Next was released for the first time in 2012 extending the DOORS Family with a next generation requirements management tool based on the IBM Jazz technology. DOORS Next has been packaged with Rational DOORS and can be used stand-alone or in conjunction with DOORS for existing users. As we develop IBM Engineering DOORS Next we plan to continue to invest in IBM DOORS  and provide additional DOORS releases. When you need to determine whether to use IBM DOORS or IBM Engineering DOORS Next, consider the answers to these questions:

1. What is IBM (Rational) DOORS  and how does it relate to IBM Engineering DOORS Next?

IBM DOORS has been the market leading requirements management application for at least the last decade. With IBM DOORS, teams can reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve quality by improving communication about, collaboration with, and verification of requirements throughout organizations and across supply chains.

IBM estimates that at least one million people are active users of IBM DOORS, and that the average specification created and managed in IBM DOORS includes thousands of requirements. Some programs manage hundreds of thousands of requirements each. IBM Engineering DOORS Next takes the best parts of DOORS and recreates a new requirements management tool hosted on top of the IBM Jazz technology platform.

2. What is the fundamental difference in functionality between IBM Engineering DOORS Next and IBM DOORS?

IBM Engineering DOORS Next is a fully web based Requirements Management tool offering based within your existing web browser. This web based approach allows organizations to have a far cheaper deployment process reducing the cost of deployment and allowing organizations to roll out new releases of functionality on a more frequent basis.

When storage services are moved onto the Jazz platform, constraints can be removed because we can redesign internal data structures to provide more flexibility in addressing the needs customers have today and are likely to have in the future. For example, IBM Engineering DOORS Next is being designed to employ reuse concepts. In addition, a commercial database will be used to bring more flexible and standardized operational procedures to IBM DOORS administrators. IBM envisions requirements engineers using IBM Engineering DOORS Next to create specifications in which requirements are displayed in multiple places simultaneously. At the same time, those engineers will retain full control over the project scope as the requirements are updated. This reuse can also be used with project-wide type systems. Projects teams will be able to use common data types to efficiently and consistently define requirements.

3. When should I be interested in using IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next?

In direct answer, IBM Engineering DOORS Next is ready for deployment and we have customers already up and running with live programs. Customers make significant investments in the data that they put into IBM DOORS and the processes that they build around that data. Protecting those investments is one of our key objectives. Based on customer feedback we do not expect customers to perform on mass data migration of a database but to have a more controlled project by project approach. Data can be migrated using ReqIF or migration packages.

Customers wishing to have a team start to use IBM Engineering DOORS Next while still having information in DOORS 9 can link requirements in both databases (using OSLC) while still being able to display trace columns in each tool. Teams that use the IBM DOORS extension language (DXL) have additional considerations before they move to IBM Engineering DOORS Next. It is the intention of IBM to provide customers with a product which can be configured to support organizations needs rather than require them to write scripts. DOORS Next already provides capabilities which remove the need for some of the DXL scripts in DOORS 9 today.

IBM is building IBM Engineering DOORS Next in such a way that a project or enterprise can decide over time when they should move their working environment from IBM DOORS. DOORS will continue to have investment and releases of new functionality. If you have projects that might benefit from the functionality in IBM Engineering DOORS Next we recommend you take a look at further information on Jazz.net.
